ARE YOU GETTING THE CORRECT VACCINE?

We have seen reports in newspapers that patients are hastening to get their flu vaccines following recent media reports regarding the seriousness of Influenza, but are not getting the correct vaccine for them.

If you are 65 or older you are eligible for an enhanced trivalent flu vaccine. (Brand names: Fluzone and Fluad). This vaccine has a 25% stronger immune response to flu than the standard quadrivalent vaccine. Both the WHO (World Health Organisation) and ATAGI (Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation) recommends this vaccine for patients aged 65 and older. The strain which is not included in this vaccine is the Brisbane influenza B strain which is much less likely to be here this year. This years enhanced trivalent vaccine gives older Australians added protection.

Only accredited Pharmacy Immunisers are registered to give the Government funded vaccines. If you plan to have your vaccine at a pharmacy you should check that they are accredited to ensure you get the correct vaccine.

The Victorian Government has funded the flu vaccine for children 5 and under this year. If you have some chronic diseases, or are pregnant you also qualify for a Government funded quadrivalent vaccine.

We are told there have been greater than 10,000 laboratory confirmed cases of influenza already this year.
